What is a Mini Split?

A mini split is a permanent point-of-use climate control system that works separately from a central HVAC unit. Mini splits with heat pumps offer both heating and cooling, while mini splits without heat pumps only offer AC. Heat pump mini splits operate using a compact indoor air-handler unit connected to an outdoor compressor. The air handler unit is mounted in an inconspicuous place on the wall inside the space and small holes are drilled to connect the interior unit to the exterior condenser using small refrigerant lines.

While we are able to install any type of mini split configuration a customer requests, we find the flexibility of a mini split heat pump cannot be beat in a state with hot summers and cold winters (like Colorado). Flow Right offers complimentary estimates, so give us a call and set up an appointment to discuss your options!

How Does a Ductless Mini Split Work?

Summer Heat Pump

AC Mode: The system pulls warm air in the room through the air handler. The air  is cooled and blown back into the room while the heat absorbed is transferred to the outside.

Winter Heat Pump

Heat Pump Mode: The evaporator coil absorbs any heat it can get from the outdoors and compresses it to make it even hotter, warming the refrigerant in the lines. The warm air is then pumped into the room.

Where to Install Your Heat Pump

The smaller size of modern mini splits makes them extremely versatile and they can be mounted in a variety of ways.

What Are the Benefits of a Ductless Mini Split System?

Ductless mini split systems have become enormously popular in the United States. The current market value sits around $1.4 BN with projections for that amount to nearly double in the next decade. Why have they become a leading HVAC alternative? Here’s a quick look at the benefits.

Compact

The second biggest concern customers have about ductless mini splits is that they will be big and obtrusive and make your space look ugly. As with noise, manufacturers have also worked to significantly reduce the size of air handlers and condensers so they have a smaller footprint in your home.

It’s also worth considering the space and safety issues that come with using alternatives like space heaters and portable air conditioners and swamp coolers. Space heaters must have adequate ventilation and clearance in order to operate safely. That means they sit away from walls or on top of furniture with a cord plugged into the wall — that’s far more inconvenient and definitely less safe than a wall-mounted mini split.

Window AC units and portable swamp coolers come with their own difficulties and also take up space. Portable AC units take away the use of a whole window for the entire summer. They have to be kept secure, level and protected from the elements and create vectors for insects and moisture to enter your home. Portable swamp coolers take up a faucet and floor space and they have the potential to leak — which they often do.

Ductless

One of the top benefits of owning a ductless mini split system is its flexibility! Unlike traditional ducted HVAC systems, a mini split is a point-of-use system installed directly in the space where it is needed. Ductless capabilities are time-, space- and money-savers especially for:

  • Older homes with existing ductwork and issues like asbestos, lead or other potential toxins that can be released with massive renovations for additional ductwork and ventilation.
  • Multi-family dwellings where extensive ductwork is difficult and expensive to maintain.
  • Urban construction where space is at a premium.
  • New builds maximizing space.
  • Businesses that don’t wish to overinvest in tenant improvements.
  • Additions, renovations and remodels where adding new ductwork is complicated or expensive.
  • Landlords looking to save money on improvements during build-outs.
  • Home and business owners upgrading HVAC in separate buildings like garages, workshops, ADUs and other spaces without existing HVAC.

Smart Technology

While we may not like all of the advancements brought by new technology, the benefits of creating a “smart” home are very positive. Smart mini split systems offer users many conveniences — like being able to turn down the AC from the comfort of your bed or create schedules for heating and cooling.

Some systems may even allow you to control the climate from a distance using your phone, tablet or computer. If it suddenly gets hot in the middle of a formerly cold day (common in Colorado), you can have the AC cooling the house right before you leave for work so it’s ready when you get home. It’s also helpful if you forgot to adjust the system before leaving on vacation and don’t want to overly heat or cool an empty house. .

Quiet Operation

One of the more common objections to mini splits is a fear that they will be too loud. Most people associate zoned climate control with the loud and rattling roar of a hotel room HVAC unit. If that’s what’s been holding you back, there’s good news! Modern ductless systems are nearly whisper quiet.

Manufacturers have worked to streamline fans and components so they operate more quietly without losing power and efficiency. Many units also have a handy “quiet mode” to allow you to tamp down residual sounds even further.

Zoned Heating and Cooling

There’s nothing more frustrating than the limitations of a ducted system when it comes to heating and cooling certain spaces. We are not just talking about the cold spaces and hot spots in the home that your furnace just won’t reach. What about the garage? What about your workshop? How about that small building out back you’ve been thinking about turning into an ADU to make extra money on the side?

Ductless mini splits provide you the luxury of zoned heating and cooling anywhere your HVAC technician says is a safe place to install. That does include your chilly basement or super-hot attic, as well as additions to your home or rooms where you just want more from your HVAC than your ducted furnace or AC is providing.

You can even use a mini split for ensuring a constant climate in a specific space for unique needs like storing belongings with specialty climate requirements or raising exotic animals. Zoned climate control + smart features = homeowners with the power to curate the temperature in every space and structure the climate cycle to fit your needs.

Energy Efficient

Zoned climate control is also in demand for its ability to increase energy efficiency and help people lower their energy bills. Mini split heat pumps have become such an excellent climate control solution that you can even get tax credits at the state and federal levels for certain models. Why are they so efficient?

  • A lot of their efficiency is tied directly to their benefits. For example, ductless systems do not lose as much heat as furnaces because the hot air they generate is pumped directly into the room — no middle man.
  • Additionally, zoned climate control means that you are only heating or cooling the spaces where you want the most comfort. While your entire home needs to be kept warm (or cool) to protect appliances, wiring, plumbing and your belongings, those temperatures are probably not as comfortable as you would like them to be for lounging around with your family. The ability to only expend max energy in specific spaces will also save you money on your energy bills.
  • The inverter technology that powers mini split systems is also a major factor in their energy efficiency. This technology allows the condenser to vary its speed instead of constantly powering on and off
  • Heat pump units don’t have to create heat in the same way a fuel-powered furnace does. They absorb heat and compress it, using less energy to create a more targeted impact where they are installed.

Mini Splits for Commercial Use

More businesses are making the switch to ductless heating and air conditioning to help cut the cost of tenant improvements and build-outs. Not only that, they’re energy efficient, compact and quiet.
