It’s not always easy to tell if a furnace needs to be replaced. Sometimes a furnace is fully operational but outdated or underperforming. Maybe your energy costs have climbed over the years, or you’ve noticed a decline in heat quality. There are also times where a simple furnace repair might be the better option. Flow Right HVAC technicians can provide you with options during a routine furnace inspection. Rest assured that our team will never tell you to replace a furnace when a repair will safely fix the problem. We will not pressure you to upgrade or purchase a system you do not want. Here are some of the factors that go into the recommendation to replace a furnace.

Just because that old furnace is still kicking doesn’t mean you shouldn’t put it out to pasture. Furnaces are designed to last 20-30 years, but you don’t necessarily want to push those dates. Consider just how much technology has changed in the last 10 years alone. Then, ask yourself if that 1970s furnace is really the best machine for the job. Old furnaces are prone to leaks, breakdowns and other issues that impact the safety of your home. Plus, the older the furnace, the less likely it is to be energy efficient – which is hard on the wallet in the winter. If yours is running well, back it up with annual inspections.

Furnace Condition

If your furnace is rusting, clanking, bent or corroded, you should call and schedule an inspection. Our furnaces experience hidden damage from flooding, corrosion and other factors that can cause them to break.

Furnace Type

The Flow Right team has seen it all in our decades of furnace replacement. If you have an old-school boiler or a furnace that uses an uncommon fuel, we can replace it with a system that fits your needs.

New HVAC Needs

Have you added an addition onto your home or changed the floor plan significantly? Have you added new windows, removed carpet or opened your ceilings? Is your old gas furnace or boiler rated for heating this new space? If you add new square footage, you may need a replacement heater to ensure the new rooms are left out in the cold.

The Dangers of NOT Replacing Your Furnace

  • Leaking gas
  • Fire or explosion
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • High energy bills
  • Increased impact on the environment
  • Damage to home/pipes if fails when you are not home
  • Poor/nonexistent heating
  • Lack of options during supply shortages
  • Lack of availability during supply shortages

Common Types of Furnaces

Flow Right HVAC technicians are trained to work with multiple types of residential furnaces. (For more information on commercial furnace replacement, please refer to our commercial heating page.) If your preferred heating system is not on the list, give us a call. We can install boiler systems, newer, energy efficient furnaces and other less-common heaters.

Natural gas is the most common gas-powered furnace for urban and suburban homes.

Propane systems can be used in residential homes; however, they are more commonly found in rural areas with individual tanks supplying fuel to the furnace.

Electric systems are found in both residential and rural homes. They do not use gas fuel to heat your home, so some homeowners choose to use them to reduce the risk of fire or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Oil furnaces operate similarly to gas-powered furnaces. However, homeowners must purchase oil to operate their furnace instead of tapping into a dedicated line. Like other fuels, oil is subject to shortages and winter price hikes.

Coal furnaces are still used in modern homes. Many homeowners may choose to replace heating systems for exterior structures like garages or barns with coal heating.

You may not need to replace your furnace. Your HVAC technician will provide you with an honest assessment of your existing furnace with options for repair (if possible) or replacement.

The recommended lifespan of a furnace will vary depending on the manufacturer. The average life of a furnace can also live far beyond the warranty, but that may not be as ideal as you think. Do not consider a furnace lifespan as the only way to determine if a new one is needed.

How much does it cost to replace a furnace?

The cost to replace a furnace depends on the model, fuel, installation space and any requirements for fuel conversion. Flow Right will provide a quote that encompasses all factors so you understand the final cost. If your furnace is still operational, they may also provide an estimate for furnace repair costs.

Why do I need to hire a professional to install my new furnace?

Yes, you should hire a professional to replace your furnace, especially those that use fuel/fire to heat the home. An experienced technician will minimize the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning or fire. Professional installation will also ensure your warranty is intact.

Does Flow Right offer furnace replacement near me?

Yes, Flow Right serves Southern Colorado including Pueblo, Colorado Springs, Canon City, Trinidad and beyond.

What happens if I do not replace my furnace?

If you do not replace your furnace, you will be unable to heat your home without standalone heaters, a fireplace or a wood stove. Keep in mind that these heating methods may not protect your pipes the way that a furnace’s residual heat will and plan accordingly.

Can I convert my furnace from propane to natural gas without replacing it?

Many furnaces have the option to convert either way with a modification to the connectors. If you are interested in converting to new fuel with your furnace replacement, please inform your technician.

Do I need a permit to replace my furnace?

Flow Right will pull any permits necessary to replace your furnace. Please refer to the Pueblo Regional Building Department or Colorado Springs Regional Building Department for more information on code enforcement and permits.

How long does it take to install a furnace?

The length of time it will take to install a replacement furnace will depend on the type of furnace used and any modifications required during installation. The Flow Right team works effectively to install your new furnace as quickly as possible without sacrificing safety or workmanship.

Our AC stopped working a year after installation. We spoke to the company that installed it and had another company come out to look at it. Both said there was nothing wrong with it and we were told to use thinner filters. After several years of being miserable over the summer months and thinking we were crazy, we decided to try one time with a company we hadn’t used before. We called FlowRight and they were able to come out and see us on short notice and more importantly, they were able to accurately identify the problem and fix it. Joe was amazing. Very knowledgeable and willing to tell and show you what he was doing. They came out after hours and had our AC up and running within the hour. They were very reasonably priced as well. My biggest regret is not calling them sooner.
